Odzisi Residents Blocked the Road

October 17, 2011

Inhabitants of the Odzisi village in Dusheti district blocked the Tbilisi-Odzisi-Akhalgori road to request the freedom of their neighbors who were detained by Tskhinvali de-facto authority.

“We have one request – we want to know their whereabouts and what conditions they are in. We have appealed to the Georgia police but they promised to inform us as soon as they learn something. However, we have not received any information yet. One week has passed and we need know how the detainees are,” brother of one of the detainees Mamuka Javakhishvili told the ICMM.

The police unblocked the road two hours later. The police officers took the protesters out of the road and the traffic-movement restored.

Three people from Odzisi village – Paata Javakhishvili, 52, Giorgi Gurgenishvili, 35 and third person, whose name is not known, were kidnapped on October 11. The relatives said they went to the forest to collect tree-branches.

According to the ICMM, the detainees were accused of illegal crossing of the border and are placed in Tskhinvali detention setting. International organization representatives have not visited them yet.

Odzisi village is the last Georgian village bordering with Akhalgori.
