NATO Secretary General of Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the upcoming elections of the Georgian Parliament will be “a litmus test” for Georgia’s democracy.
Rasmussen made the statement after his meeting with the chairman of the parliament of Georgia Davit Bakradze.
Rasmussen said “democratic development of the country is basis for the success of Georgia and Georgians want to live in full mature modern democracy.”
He added the North-Atlantic Alliance relies on democratic values.
According to the Secretary General, his meeting at the parliament was particularly important for him where he suggested Davit Bakradze to keep strengthening democracy; to keep building the pillars of free and democratic state, the rule of law, the freedom of the judiciary and the media, fight against corruption, the involvement of civil society.
Rasmussen underscored that parliament plays the key role in the development of democracy in the country.
“Parliamentary elections of 2012 will be “a litmus test” for Georgia’s democracy. I expect Georgia would one day join the Alliance according 2008 NATO Bucharest summit decision,” said Rasmussen.
On November 9, Anders Fogh Rasmussen and ambassadors of the North-Atlantic Alliance met Members of Parliament in closed format.
