NATO Secretary General about Necessity of Georgian Election Code’s Perfection

November 11, 2011

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen spoke about the necessity of perfection of the Georgian Election Code. Rasmussen spoke about it during his press-conference together with the President Mikheil Saakashvili in Batumi.

“It is great honor for me to visit Georgia again. I have been Georgia several times but it is my first visit to Batumi. Eight years have passed since Rose Revolution and we see impressive progress in many fields like freedom of expression, democratic development process, and fight against corruption. You should be proud of those achievements. Georgia impressively contributes in the reinforcement of security both on national and international levels. Your contribution to ISAF operation is the second largest among non-member states and next year you will rank first place. Consequently, you, without any pre-conditions and restriction, assumed responsibility to make Georgia’s participation in the operation more significant. I welcome your pledge not to use force. NATO’s position is very clear in this direction. Those regions will always be Georgian territories but we also acknowledge that constructive dialogue is the only way for the conflict resolution. Georgia has passed long way during recent 8 years and you have achieved much progress though much should be still done. We will also discuss crucial area of election reforms; the Election Code shall ensure equal participation for voters. Political culture shall also rise which will respect views of minorities; besides that freedom of expression and judiciary system shall be guaranteed,” said Rasmussen and added that “Georgia will become a member of the Alliance.”

“I attended the Bucharest summit and I supported wholeheartedly that decision. And let me reassure you that the Bucharest decision remains firm and still stands. We are speaking about the progress which you have achieved through reforms and you have also achieved progress in your way towards NATO membership. Today, you are closer to the NATO than you were three years ago and it is due to your reforms; but we all are fully aware that membership requires fulfillment of some concrete commitments,” said Rasmussen.
