Georgian NGOs Concerned about South Ossetian Elections

November 14, 2011

Georgian non-governmental organizations are concerned about holding of presidential elections in the so-called South Ossetia.

“We think, the elections are illegal and its results cannot have impact on legitimate political environment on national and international levels. We underline, that unless thousands residents of Tskhinvali region, who had been displaced due to ethnic cleansing, return to their houses and have chance to participate in social-economic and political lives of the region, any process, including elections, will lack legal basis and cannot determine the future of the region and its population,” statement of the Coalition for Justice reads.

The authors of the statement hope the international community will adequately evaluate the so-called presidential election in Tskhinvali region as a next attempt of criminal region to legitimate the results of ethnic cleaning and will not recognize the legitimacy of the elections as well as its results.

“We call upon the international community to reinforce its efforts to restore territorial integrity of Georgia and unconditional and honorable return of IDPs to their homes. We think current status quo farther aggravates conditions of the Tskhinvali region population where, according to the evaluations of the influential international organizations, the human rights situation is one of the worst worldwide,” the statement with the signatures of 30 NGOs reads.

The presidential election was held on November 13 in the so-called South Ossetia. Candidates could not obtain more than 50% of votes in the first round and consequently, the second round is also scheduled.
