Discussion of Human Rights Problems at Boell Foundation

November 18, 2011

On November 16, South Caucasus Regional Office of the Heinrich Boell Foundation hosted discussion: ““Administration of Justice and Protection of Human Rights in the Justice System in Georgia”.

The main speakers of the debate were Public Defender of Georgia Giorgi Tugushi, executive director of the Human Rights Center Ucha Nanuashvili, project coordinator from the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association Tamuna Gvaramadze, executive director of the Public Advocacy – Manana Kobakhidze.

The main topic of the discussion was blatant violations in the court activities in 2011.

“We need fair trial in order to restore public trust towards the court. The judiciary reforms shall be changed,” said Giorgi Tugushi.

Tamuna Gvaramadze from the GYLA spoke about disproportionate verdicts passed by general courts.

Manana Kobakhidze mentioned many alarming cases during the debates.

Ucha Nanuashvili focused on the report of the CoE’s Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg about human rights situation in Georgia. According to Nanuashvili, “Government of Georgia declared Thomas Hammarberg persona-non-granta because of his principal positions.”

After the speakers finished their speeches, the participants opened discussions.
