Sandal in Batumi, Bike in Tbilisi

November 22, 2011

Way from fountains to strange sculptures.

Pop-art, which appeared in the world years ago, has entered Georgia very noisily.

Work of French artist Lilly Fantos “Dangerously Yours” confused many people in Batumi. It is sculpture of a sandal placed over eggs.

French artist Jan Doupe, 86, invented a “New Bike” and presented it to Georgia. The installment of the sculpture has not been finished yet in the Rose Revolution Square. However, people have already started speaking about it.

The Tbilisi Development Foundation is in charge of the installment of the strange bike. The head of the foundation stated the sculpture has quite important social mission.

Architect Koka Amirejibi said the idea of similar works is absence of idea. Art critic Keta Gabiani thinks “Sandal on Eggs” and “Two-Handle Bike” have somehow frightened and confused the society.

People are not much surprised. Some of them even like them. However, most viewers think the sculptures are placed in wrong places. Tbilisi residents are particularly annoyed about the bike because before the statue of the King Davit Agmashenebeli was standing near the Radisson Hotel. Replacement of the famous Georgian king with idea-less sculpture was not best idea for them.

It was debut, a noisy debut.

As a rule, similar works are placed for a short time, for several months; so we still have time to evaluate pop-artist works.
