People’s Assembly Requests Freedom for Their Arrested Supporters

December 28, 2011

People’s Assembly requests freedom for their supporters who were arrested before and after May, 2011 protest demonstrations.

On December 27, the Assembly’s lawyer Natia Korkotadze said at the press-conference in the office of the Democratic Movement that 39 people are in penitentiary setting nowadays who are charged under criminal law but the court has not passed judgment on them yet.

The lawyer claims the Court red taped the process and postponed the hearing to 2012.

“All these people were arbitrarily detained on political grounds. After detention, they were not allowed to get in touch with the family members and enjoy the lawyer’s assistance. The detainees were placed in quarantine in extremely poor conditions,” she said.

Korkotadze petitioned to the Minister of Interior Vano Merabishvili to return the office and misappropriated property to the People’s Assembly as well as their cars.
