GYLA Requests Starting Disciplinary Proceedings against Representative of Defense Ministry Mamuka Iosava

Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) requests the Ministry of Defense of Georgia to start disciplinary proceedings against its representative Mamuka Iosava.

The case regards the information sent to the GYLA Media Legal Center according to which the representatives of the Defense Ministry met with the locals regarding the military reserve service. However they were prohibited to attend the meeting of livepress and were not given oral information regarding the content of the meeting.

“The journalists tried to receive information in the form of interview from the participants who came out of the building after the end of the meeting. The representative of Defense Ministry Mamuka Iosava unlawfully seized the camera from the journalist and deleted the video material,” – GYLA states.

The internet publication Netgazeti.ge disseminated information yesterday that the Defense Ministry apologized regarding the yesterday’s fact.

Media Legal Defense Center of GYLA categorically requests the Defense Ministry not to find the apology sufficient and to start disciplinary proceedings against Mamuka Iosava.

“Conduct of Iosava has signs of not only disciplinary but criminal offense. He illegally deleted the material obtained by the journalists and did not give them chance to give objective and comprehensive information to the public. Creating guarantees for the media independence and ensuring them is the government’s function at uppermost and it should issue strictest response to the illegal acts of the employees of state departments and exceeding their work authority,” – GYLA states.
