Christian-Democratic Movement States Farmers Victimized by the Hybrid Corn Program Were Not Exempt from Taxes

January 18, 2012

According to the Christian-Democratic Movement, the Agricultural Corporation refused to free the farmers, victimized by the hybrid corn program, from taxes.

Representatives of the CDM told Interpresnews that one of their leaders Giorgi Akhvlediani met residents of Gomi village in Samtredia district on January 17. The MP presented local people with the letter from the Agricultural Corporation which stated that loans taken by the farmers from the bank to purchase the seed of the hybrid corn will not be annulled and they will have to pay it together with the loan percentage.

“It is incredible impunity. Everybody remembers the president’s public promise. He said everybody who was victimized because of the Hybrid Corn Program will have the loans annulled. They even spoke about compensations. Today, everything has been forgotten and the president’s decree is ignored,” Akhvlediani said.

He said members of the Christian-Democratic Movement will request Mikheil Saakashvili to respond to this issue when he will present an annual report in the parliament.

Residents of Gomi village complained about the poor harvest and low price of the corn with Giorgi Akhvlediani; they said they cannot afford to pay the bank loans with the income they receive from the hybrid corn.

“Local farmers followed all recommendations about preserving agro-terms, and other procedures to grow hybrid corn, but despite all that the harvest was very poor. Thus, we doubted the validity of the seeds and tried to analyze the corn; however, all licensed laboratories refused to analyze the corn which increased our doubts,” Akhvlediani said.
