Mindia Ugrekhelidze: “Parliament Maliciously Interpreted the Venice Commission’s Proposals”

January 27, 2012

Law expert Mindia Ugrekhelidze thinks the amendments introduced to the Law of Georgia on Political Unions of Citizens have nothing to do with the recommendations of the Council of Europe and particularly of the Venice Commission. Ugrekhelidze thinks “it was malicious misinterpretation of their proposals.”

“I had honor to work in the system of the Council of Europe. I closely cooperated with the Venice Commission and the head of the Commission is my friend. The delicate style of the Commission’s recommendations, which they use with regard to various countries, is often misinterpreted and incorrectly realized. The amendments, which the Georgian authority introduced to the Georgian law on Political Unions, are not related with the essence of the Venice Commission’s recommendations. Furthermore, the Venice Commission had several notes, which were not envisaged by the Georgian Parliament and we should put an end to similar practice,” Ugrekhelidze told the Pirveli who added “The law passed by the Parliament meets neither national nor international standards.”

Georgian Development Research Institute will provide the Venice Commission with its conclusion on the amendments introduced to the Law on Political Unions. On January 26, the Levan Izoria presented the Organization’s conclusion to the representatives of political parties, non-governmental and international organizations and diplomatic corps.
