UN Security Council members today strongly condemned two recent attacks against Israeli diplomatic personnel and underlined that terrorist acts can never be justified regardless of their motivations. In a statement to the press, issued by Ambassador Kodjo Menan of Togo, which holds the rotating Council presidency this month, the 15-member body urged all United Nations Member States to play their part to combat terrorism.

On 13 February, several diplomatic personnel and civilians were injured when a bomb reportedly placed on an Israeli embassy vehicle exploded in the Indian capital, New Delhi.
On the same day, in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital, a bomb found in the vehicle of an Israeli diplomatic official was reportedly defused before it could explode.

“The members of the Security Council condemned the new and recurring acts of violence against diplomatic and consular representatives, which endanger or take innocent lives and seriously impede the normal work of such representatives and officials,” the press statement noted.

The statement, which echoed similar comments last week by a spokesperson for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, also stressed the obligations facing Member States under a series of global conventions relating to diplomatic agents and their activities.
