Irakli Alasania Addresses Security Council

March 20, 2012

interpressnews

Free Democrats decided not to disclose information regarding the formation of illegal armed groups in Samegrelo at this stage. They will send this information for urgent examination to the Security Council of Georgia.

Leader of Free Democrats Irakli Alasania stated following on March 20th special briefing.

According to Alasania, they made this decision due to state interests since the state territories are occupied and this information could be used against state of Georgia.

According to his statement, Free Democrats have complete information regarding the dislocation, illegal armament and financing of these groups and that they found out about this from people who care for the fate of their country.

As Alasania noted, they have been collecting and examining this information and today he can state with full responsibility that by direct order of Mikheil Saakashvili, armed groups are actively being formed in Western Georgia.

According to him, these formations are created in order to persecute and intimidate opponent politicians, their supporters and activists and apply means of physical abuse when necessary.

“I was always there when my homeland was hurting, including with my gun in hands. But from the day I joined politics, I am trying to establish the political culture which will change state government by the only way – fair elections. Unfortunately, government does not share these fundamental principles and by direct order of Saakashvili for several months illegal armed groups are being formed in Western Georgia,” – Alasania noted.

He alleges that Akhalaia clan exercises absolute power in Samegrelo – Roland Akhalaia who is a prosecutor in the region and his sons; one Defense Minister and another – head of Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) departments.

As Alasania noted Akhalaias were commissioned to create these commissions. Then they gave assignments to concrete individuals which represent law-enforcement bodies. According to him, these people are: Roman Shamatava, Nugzar Pingani, Sergo Ubilava, Pridon Shengelia, Tornike Malazonia, Koba Todua, Mamuka Iosava, Zaza Janjghava, Zviad Gagua and Davit Darsmelidze.

According to the leader of Free Democrats, these groups do not represent reservists since the formation rule of reservists is different.

“Unfortunately, these groups are subordinated to concrete law-enforcement bodies and not to the armed groups. Their only goal is not to let population make free choice and not to create concurrent electoral environment,” – Alasania noted.

According to him, they are referring to approximately 500 people who fought for territorial integrity of Georgia in the past; some have criminal past and some materialistic interest.

Alasania addressed the members of group that they should not join Saakashvili in this fight which is directed against its own people.

Opposition leader addressed Mikheil Saakashvili as well:

“I would like to tell him directly to take immediate measures and urgently disband these band formations. We want to change government only by means of elections,” – Alasania stated.

According to him, there is well-grounded fear that these kinds of groups are formed in Tbilisi as well and they will notify public after examining information.

Representatives of diplomatic community also attended Irakli Alasania’s briefing. Free Democrats did not pass them concrete information about armed groups. According to Alasania, they can request it from Security Council.
