John Bass – My Statement Was not Clearly Understood by All Parties

March 20, 2012

U.S. ambassador in Georgia John Bass commented about his post published on his facebook page, regarding the activity of the Chamber of Control.

“That comment concerned the controversy linked with the responsibility and authority of the Chamber of Control. It was caused by the lack of information we have and there is no clear responsibility and authority that the Chamber of Control has when executing demands of this law”, the ambassador told journalists at Vaziani Base, while he attended the U.S.-Georgian military drills along with other diplomatic corps’ representatives.

He added that political environment is often polarized in Georgia and society wishes to be more informed about the responsibilities of various institutions which is finally related with fair election environment in the country.

“I observe my statement was not clearly understood by political parties. My statement was caused by the fact that there was not complete information about the rights and responsibility of the Chamber of Control”, John Bass said.

John Bass made a statement some days ago about the activities of the Chamber of Control on his facebook page.

“I am concerned about the controversy surrounding the Chamber of Control's recent activities. The lack of clear guidelines regarding its work to implement campaign finance legislation will not increase public confidence in this institution or in a competitive campaign environment”, John Bass posted.
