Tamaz Tamazashvili to Appeal European Court

May 2, 2012

On April 30, Tbilisi City Court imposed 3 year and 6 month imprisonment on Tamaz Tamazashvili, father-in-law of Irakli Garibashvili, member of the Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia’s initiative group.

Judge Giorgi Arevadze stated that Tamaz Tamazashvili was convicted under Article 236 Part I and II of the Criminal Code of Georgia and sentenced to imprisonment for 3 years and 6 months based on aggregated punishments.

The judgment can be appealed at the Appeal Court within the term of one month.

Irakli Garibashvili said Tamaz Tamazashvili intends to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights after they appeal all national courts.

“We did not expect different judgment from the national judiciary system. My father-in-law was arrested on political grounds. We will definitely appeal against the judgment and having finished all judiciary procedures on national level, we will appeal to the European Court too,” Garibashvili said after the trial on Tamazashvili’s case was over at the City Court.

The lawyers said the Court has passed next illegal judgment.

“The person was arrested for the crime which he had not committed. The evidence enclosed to case materials could not prove his guiltiness,” Shalva Tadumadze said.
