American Senator Shows Interest in Pre-election Situation in Georgia

U.S. Senator Richard Durbin showed interested in the pre-election situation in Georgia, representatives of the organization“Fair Elections” Nino Lomjaria stated after meeting with the Senator.

She says that Durbin also was interested in the activity of the democratic institutions in the country; the senator is interested in the issue of funding of political parties and NGO activities.

Chair of the Young Lawyers’ Association Tamar Chugoshvili states that elections and election-related topics were discussed.

GYLA highlighted that cable broadcasters must be obliged to send signals to various TV Companies as this provides an equal electoral environment and gives full information to the voters.

The GYLA chairperson also highlighted the weakness of democratic institutions, parliament and judicial system, which is negatively reflected on the election environment.

The American Senator visited Tbilisi today. He met with civic sector representatives. The meeting was attended by head of NDI office in Georgia Luis Navarro, representatives of Fair Elections Nino Lomjaria, representatives of International transparency Georgia – Eka Gigauri, chair of Young Lawyers’ Association Tamar Chugoshvili and representative of the Trade Union. Richard Durbin’s visit will last two days. The senator will meet with the President of Georgia and opposition representatives today.
