Ramaz Sakvarelidze: “Clinton Led Short, Polite Discussion with Mikheil Saakashvili”

June 6, 2012

Political scientist Ramaz Sakvarelidze thinks on May 5 President Mikheil Saakashvili again avoided clear answer to the question about possibility of his becoming prime-minister of Georgia.

“Saakashvili answered the journalist’s question saying – institutions are significant and not individuals. By the way, Hillary Clinton made an interesting comment on this issue and said that fate of institutions depends on individuals and leaders. So, we can assume that Clinton led a short but polite discussion with Mikheil Saakashvili and told him he is responsible how democratic the institutions of president and prime-minister will be in Georgia and if he continues being the leader in the country, it will be difficult to speak about democracy,” Ramaz Sakvarelidze told Interpresnews.

Besides that, the political scientist thinks Saakashvili is eager to become a prime-minister but it is not good for him to openly speak about it currently for two reasons:

“I think he is eager to become prime-minister. I would be surprised if a young politician like he will not have ambition to continue political activities on senior positions but another point is how he feels about current situation. Anyway, he would not declare it openly: if he states today that he is not going to become a prime-minister, his political campaign will collapse but if he admits that in future he plans to be leader of the government, he will disappoint the west. So, he acts like a butterfly, does not say anything,” political scientist said.

On May 5, during the joint briefing of US Secretary Hillary Clinton and President Mikheil Saakashvili, Reuter’s journalist asked Saakashvili  about his plans to become prime-minister and the president indirectly answered him; he said development of institutions is significant not individuals.

In parallel to the president’s comment, Hillary Clinton underlined the significance of the decisions of the leaders and citizens of Georgia. US State Secretary said that those decisions will have huge impact on the development and reinforcement of democratic institutions in the country.
