ISFED - Electoral Environment Deteriorated

June 15, 2012

International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy ISFED concluded that environmental environment has deteriorated in comparison with previous month. The organization evaluated the pre-election environment and published second interim-report of the monitoring.

ISFED Chairwoman Nino Lomjaria said they detected more shortcomings and violations in the report period, which covered May 4-June 4, than it was observed during the previous report period.

“According to our observation during the monitoring period 10 people were supposedly sacked from jobs on political grounds; 9 cases of intimidation and oppression were observed; 2 persons were physically assaulted on political grounds; 4 journalists were interfered during their professional activities; in two cases activities of observation organizations were hindered and 6 cases of misuse of administrative resources occurred,” Nino Lomjaria said.

The report provides information about the activities of the Chamber of Control, as well as data about public meetings of political parties and their promises to citizens.

In this light, ISFED believes that more active measures must be taken to improve electoral environment including introduction of amendments to concrete laws. Due to observed violations the Organization recommends to the Inter-Agency Commission to get more active.

The second interim report covers period from May 4 to June 4 of 2012 and those events which had taken start before the May 4 but continued during the report period. The organization continues monitoring of pre-election environment and will publish next interim report in the middle of June.
