Unequal Conditions at Polling Stations

September 20, 2012

“Kutaisi declared full readiness for the upcoming parliamentary elections. Serious preparation activities are taken and all conditions are created for the Election Day in precincts. As for the technical equipment of Precinct Election Commissions, we have time before the Election Day and hopefully this process will finish successfully,” chairman of the Kutaisi District Election Commission # 59 Avtandil Osepaishvili said during the first meeting of the precinct election commissions.

About one month later after this statement, the members of the PECs complain about unequal working conditions.

“Although the process of election administrations’ completion finished and voters’ lists were placed in precincts, it is not enough. PECs work in unbearable conditions. Unfortunately, commission chairpersons, whose majority represents the ruling party, do not pay attention to this problem. They are interested in completely different problems (like gaining voters over, victory in the elections, etc),” a member of the PEC from the opposition party told humanrights.ge who refrained from publishing his name because of certain reasons.

Polling stations were opened in education institutions, medical centers, public schools, buildings of former municipal institutions and in residential buildings.

The 2012 Parliament will be elected in 127 polling stations throughout Kutaisi. 11 days before the Election Day, a set of problems still remain unresolved.
