Demonstrators Request Entrance to Kutaisi Prison

September 26, 2012

Representatives of media and nongovernmental organizations continue demonstrations in front of state institutions within the context of 10-day rallies of the public movement “Stop Act”.

On September 24, demonstrators gathered in front of Kutaisi Appeal Court and requested entrance into Kutaisi Prison # 2. They state that prison inmates are in horrible conditions and they have been on hunger-strike for four days already, requesting the dismissal of prison personnel.

“We applied to the Public Defender’s Kutaisi office to allow us to enter the prison; we want to see personally the real situation in the prison. Only after that will we be assured  that prisoners are not in danger,” the protestors said.

Humanrights.ge got in touch with the Public Defender’s Kutaisi office. Ombudsman’s attorney in Imereti region Madona Basiladze said nobody had applied to them with the request.

“Yesterday we spent the whole day in Kutaisi Prison #2. We are thoroughly studying the current situation there. I confirm that several inmates are on hunger strike and they are demanding the dismissal of prison personnel,” the Ombudsman’s attorney said. According to her, some employees of the prison have already quit their jobs.
