What Is Going On Behind CEC Building?

October 1, 2012

At a briefing last night, CEC Chairman Zurab Kharatishvili stated that he “did not have any information about the new road paved behind the CEC office and existence of the building behind it.” .

He said he had first heard about the road and building from journalists and Georgian Dream’s leaders just before the briefing.

Kharatishvili clarified that everything is in order within the CEC territory but he does not have information about ongoing processes beyond CEC territory.

Coalition Georgian Dream discovered a new road paved to the office of the Central Election Commission and spoke about suspicious circumstances. Coalition leaders Davit Saganelidze, Gogi Topadze, Zviad Dzidziguri and Zurab Tkemaladze arrived at the CEC building on September 30. They took journalists with them too.

Saganelidze reported that a concrete fence was constructed on the land of a private owner just behind the CEC building; an old building, supposedly the property of the City Hall, is located behind the CEC office; the road is being cleaned and a passage has been made to the office of Voters’ Lists Verification Commission which is linked with the CEC office via a corridor, Saganelidze claimed.

He added that they have two theories about the government’s intention. “This government has many nasty plans. We have witnessed many such events. They filled ballot boxes full of fake ballot papers. It is not out of the question that they have similar plans now too. If they take ballot boxes out this way, nobody will see it. However, they will not be able to do it from the central entrance,” Saganelidze noted and added that there is another theory according to which the government intends to deploy riot police in the abandoned building.

Zviad Dzidziguri, the majoritarian candidate of Georgian Dream in Rustavi, said the coalition representatives will monitor the territory on Election Day in order to prevent falsification of votes. “We will observe it! We receive all kinds of information. This information is provided by the National Movement’s HQ. We were notified about this particular incident from their HQ as well,” Zviad Dzidziguri said.

Personnel of the cleaning service were cleaning the abandoned building behind the CEC last night but they did not talk with journalists. They just said that they were sent by City Hall and they had started cleaning on the previous day.
