Adam Michnik: “Even World Fortune Cannot Buy What I Saw in Tbilisi Streets”

October 3, 2012

“There was a stereotype in the west - we must not pay much attention to Georgia’s internal affairs as Saakashvil and his group is pro-western team, but this stereotype broke yesterday,”Adam Michnik, famous Polish human rights defender, the editor of newspaper Wyborcza said in his interview with Radio Program Now and Here of the Georgian radio station Palitra.

Adam Michnik added that according to spread information Ivanishvili was buying everything but as Michnik said even the World fortune cannot buy what he saw in Tbilisi streets.

“Changes are possible in western views. Ivanishvili’s statement was a clear signal for the West that Georgia is aspiring to EU and it does not intend to change foreign political course of the country. A significant phrase was heard in Ivanishvili’s speech-there will be no revenges; he will be oriented on the collaboration. His phrase - Georgia belongs to its every citizen - is also very important message. Everything what I saw proves existence of civic society in Georgia at 100%. Authority often influences people like a narcotic and civic society is the only source to defeat this disease,” Adam Michnik stated.

Well-known Polish human rights defender also spoke about perspectives of Russian-Georgian cooperation. As he alleged emotions disturbs political relations.

“Of course, Russia is responsible for the past events because it is a huge country. Everything what I saw in Georgia is the new corridor which will promote new partnership relations and give start to resolution of problems. For example the fact that Ivanishvili accumulated his capital in Russia does not mean that he is Putin’s man. Khadarkovsk who is prisoner in Russia gained his fortune in the USA”, - Adam Michnik stated.

Adam Michnik also hopes that Polish government will properly realize ongoing events in Georgia and relationship between two countries will be deepened.
