Prisoner Giorgi Chubinidze Accuses Bacho Akhalaia of Beating and Torturing

October 5, 2012

Inmate of the Ksani Prison Giorgi Chubinidze accuses Bacho Akhalaia of beating and torturing him and intends to appeal to the court. Bacho Akhalaia is former Minister of Internal Affairs, who also occupied the positions of the chairman of the penitentiary department and minister of penitentiary at different times. The prisoner’s mother Bela Lortkipanidze reported to InterPressNews about this issue.

According to Lortkipanidze, the incident occurred in prison hospital in 2006, just before the famous prison riot, when Akhalaia was head of the penitentiary department.

“My son was in the jail hospital for the gunshot in his leg. His hip-bone was broken and the wound was so serious that doctors refused to make surgery. My son had to lie in bed without movement during 6 months. One night, drunken Bacho Akhalaia with a bottle of Champaign in his hand rushed into his cell together with security guards. He removed the irons from Giorgi’s legs, threw them on the floor and started to beat him with a truncheon. Giorgi spent whole night in similar situation before Traumatologist entered his cell in the morning”, the prisoner’s mother said.

She said it was useless to sue Bacho Akhalaia before because they could not reach justice but now they will definitely appeal to the court because they believe Akhalaia must be punished.

Lortkipanidze said Giorgi Chubinidze was arrested in 2002 for robbery and was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison. In 2005 he was moved to the psychiatric division of the prison from where he tried to escape and security guard wounded him at that moment. 14 years were added to his term as a result of this incident.
