President Reduced Demetradze’s Punishment by Half

October 10, 2012

On August 28 the president reduced Giorgi Demetradze’s punishment by half. Marika Pkhaladze- the lawyer of imprisoned football player Giorgi Demetradze stated about it.

“He was pardoned on August 28 but he was not liberated. The punishment that was left by August 28 was reduced by half. He had four more years left and it was reduced by two years”, Demetradze’s lawyer told Netgazeti.

She added it was unexpected for Demetradze too as he had not applied to the president for pardon.

“Neither he nor his family have applied to the president with the request. On August 28 President’s pardon decree was handed to him. It read his punishment was reduced by half. The law states that prisoner must personally apply to the president with the request of pardon. Besides that one of the main requirements to pardon the convicted is to plead guilty. But in this concrete case neither of these conditions was satisfied. So Demetradze did not apply to the president and he has not pleaded guilty”,-the lawyer Marika Pkhaladze told Netgazeti.

Netgazeti tried to contact Manana Manjgaladze- president’s spokesperson to learn more details though she did not answer phone calls.

Giorgi Demetradze was arrested for the cooperation with so-called thieves-in-law. In March of 2011 Tbilisi City Court found him guilty and sentenced him to 6 years imprisonment. Furthermore, Tbilisi City Court confiscated his property and 30 thousand dollars that was found during the search.
