Tamaz Tamazashvili Liberated from Imprisonment

October 10, 2012

On October 10 police general Tamaz Tamazashvili was liberated from imprisonment. He is Irakli Gharibashvili’s father-in-law and the latter is Georgian Dream’s candidate for the position of Minister of Internal Affairs. Tamazashvili left Gldani prison #8 in the morning. His family, friends and former colleagues were waiting for him at the prison.

Tamazashvili told journalists he was innocent and was imprisoned illegally. He added he was astonished with videos depicted by televisions during pre-election period which alleged that he cooperated with criminals.

On October 9 Chamber of Criminal Law of the Supreme Court of Georgia approved plea agreement between the prosecutor and Tamaz Tamazashvili.

According to April 30, 2012 court judgment Tbilisi City Court found Tamaz Tamazashvili guilty in the purchase, storage and carriage of firearm and explosives. He was sentenced to three and half year imprisonment. Tamazashvili was imprisoned on October 11, 2011.

Tbilisi Appeal Court did not change the verdict. The parties appealed to the Supreme Court on plea-agreement.

According to the Supreme Court it clearly clarified his rights to the convicted person. Consequently the court got convinced that all pre-conditions for plea agreement were met. Besides that, the parties (convict, his lawyer and prosecutor) again confirmed that they had voluntarily agreed on the punishment measure.

The Supreme Court approved the plea agreement between the parties and imposed only one-year imprisonment on Tamaz Tamazashvili [starting from the date of his imprisonment on October 11, 2011].

According to Tamaz Tamazashvili’s lawyer-Shalva Tadumadze, although plea agreement was officially signed, Tamazashvili did not plead guilty.

“He does not plead guilty and does not confess charge against him, but the Prosecutor’s Office accepted our proposal to reduce the term to one year imprisonment. Consequently, this term expired on October 11. However, in accordance to the Patriarch’s blessing the prisoner was liberated a day earlier,” Tadumadze said.
