Mgvimevi Residents Blocked Road

October 23, 2012

On October 22, residents of Mgvimevi village in Chiatura district blocked the road towards a manganese quarry. Although miners are on strike in Chiatura, some individual businessmen have not stopped working and are  still extracting manganese.

Locals state that a large amount of ore is still being transported away from the town. They are irritated by the fact that “the town is almost paralyzed, miners continue their protest to request increased salaries and improved working conditions, whilst certain people are still struggling to earn a salary,” they said.

The villagers also demanded reform regarding the environmental damage created by extracting manganese from an  open quarry.
