Norwegian Helsinki Committee Recommends Ucha Nanuashvili for the Position of Ombudsman

November 12, 2012

Norwegian Helsinki Committee supports executive director of Human Rights Center Ucha Nanuashvili, whose candidature for the position of Georgian Public Defender was offered to Parliament of Georgia by part of Georgian human rights organizations.

Head of Norwegian Helsinki Committee’s Georgian Program Aage Borchgrevink signed the support letter.

“This is to certify that for ten years the Norwegian Helsinki Committee has cooperated closely with the Human Rights Center (HRC), and that we hold its executive director Ucha Nanuashvili in high regard. We have monitored elections together, researched various reports and for the last six years, the NHC has been a donor to the HRC. In all that time Ucha has been our main partner in Georgia, and he has emerged as a central player in Georgia’s relatively strong and vibrant civil society.

We have come to know Ucha as a reliable man of strong character and integrity. He has an extensive network locally in Georgia and internationally through HRCs membership in the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). Because of his personal credentials, and the fact-based work of the HRC, he is recognized as a key human rights defender in Georgia internationally.

The Norwegian Helsinki Committee wishes to recommend Ucha to any position in the human rights sphere, internationally, in the Georgian state or in the non-governmental sector.
