General Inspection Started to Study of Aleksi Bakhutov’s Case

December 27, 2012

General Inspection of the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia started to study case on Aleksi Bakhutov. Head of press-service of the Chief Prosecutor’s Office Khatuna Paichadze informed ICK about it.

Yesterday, ICK reported that prosecutor Zurab Javakhishvili at the regional prosecutor’s office, who was leading the investigation on Aleksi Bakhutov’s case, was promoted and appointed to the position of the Telavi district deputy prosecutor.

Bakhutov’s case was mentioned in the reports of international organizations. He was compelled to confess murder of Lasha Chopikashvili after torture. Telavi district court sentenced Bakhutov to 6-year-imprisonment. Later investigation estimated that “killed” person was alive. Despite that, Bakhutov was not released from imprisonment. The Prosecutor’s Office changed qualification of the charge into attempted murder and reduced his sentence.

When commenting on the promotion of Javakhishvili, Kakheti regional prosecutor Estate Margebadze told ICK that he did not have information about Bakhutov’s case. “I did not have information about Bakhutov. We have already informed Chief Prosecutor’s Office about it and we will make relevant decision. I confirm that Zurab Javakhishvili, who worked on this case, was promoted,” said Bregadze.
