Parliamentary Majority Claims – Judges Shall Be Free from Politics

January 8, 2013

“Supreme Court shall be free from politics,” it is initiative of the parliamentary majority. On December 27, legislative body discussed part of amendments to be introduced to the Law on Common Courts which regulates appointment – dismissal of judges at the Supreme Court.

MP Irina Imerlishvili from the majority clarified: “Legislative body shall appoint and dismiss judges of the Supreme Court instead Supreme Council of Justice. In this case, the court will become fair and gain public trust back.”

Both Chief Prosecutor’s Office and Ministry of Justice welcome this initiative. Chairman of the Supreme Court Konstantine Kublashvili said: “It is next political assault by the new government and interference in the independent activities of the court.”

“The authors of the initiative claim they want to establish fair justice. In fact, they try to subordinate the judiciary system to the Georgian Dream,” members of the parliamentary minority said.
