Residents of Mandaeti Village Request to Cancel the Village Governor

January 11, 2013

New governors were appointed in the village of Chiatura district at the end of December. They were appointed based on the decree of the district governor. On January 8, part of Mandaeti village population protested the new candidature of the village governor – Gela Gelashvili.

Gela Gelashvili occupied the position on December 24, 2012. His supporters and opponents gathered to meet Chiatura district governor Sulkhan Makhatadze in the village center. Verbal conflict between them turned into physical assault.

Representatives of local government tried to calm down the situation. They allowed villagers to nominate several candidates. Governmental officials hope the situation will soon calm down in Mandaeti village and they, together with the villagers, will agree on one candidate.
