General Inspection of the MIA launches investigation based on Beka Gochiashvili’s statement

In connection with the statement made by Beka Gochiashvili General Inspection has launched an internal investigation at the request of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs says.

“Considering high public interest, details of the investigation will be made public. If the investigation establishes that Beka Gochiashvili and his brother Lasha Gochiashvili were subject to intimidation and pressure from the side of police officers by means of abusing powers, the Ministry of Internal Affairs will act in accordance with the law.

Beka Gochiashvili and his brother were interrogated by the law enforcers regarding the apartment robbery that took place on January 4, 2013. The officers of the fifth police station of Vake-Saburtalo Police Division have launched investigation on the fact of robbing Nana Davitai’s apartment, located at Kostava Street N63a, as a result of which 60,000 EU, 20,000 GEL, 10,000 USD and jewelry worth 300,000 USD were stolen from the safe located in the apartment”, the statement says.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, after the testimonies, given by the witnesses it was established that the apartment key was used by several individuals, including Beka Gochiashvili, who, with the consent of the apartment owner, invited friends and stayed in the apartment for one day.

“On January 8, 2013 Beka Gochiashvili, juvenile, was questioned in the attendance of his father, Valerian Gochiashvili as well as his brother, Lasha Gochiashvili within the frame of the ongoing investigation. Beka Gochiashvili stated that during his stay in the apartment his friends searched through the house, as they were looking for a USB cable. In the process of searching for the cable one of his friends, whose identity he failed to name, called him and told that there was a safe in the dresser of the bedroom. Gochiashvili explained that he went in the bedroom, saw the safe and asked friends to stop searching, because of the awkwardness of the situation. It was late at night on January 4, 2013 when he became aware that the safe was stolen from Davitaia’s apartment.

In connection with the above mentioned case Beka Gochiashvili’s friends were also interrogated as witnesses on the same day.

Investigation is conducted by the fifth police station of Vake-Saburtalo Police Division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs”, the statement says.

16-year-old jazzman Beka Gochiashvili blamed law enforcement officers in oppression. He said he was interrogated during 6 hours and blamed with abuse.
