“Coalition of Human Rights Defenders” Protests Appointment of Politicians on Senior Positions in Sport Federations

January 23, 2013

Coalition of Human Rights Defenders” protests appointment of politicians on senior positions in sport federations.

On this issue, the head of the Coalition Nikoloz Mzhavanadze held a press conference today and stated that appointment of politicians on senior positions in sport federations will politicize sport and there is a chance the authority will use sportsmen for their favor.

“After the new government came to power, the Minister of Sport, Levan Kipiani stated, that sport will no longer be politicized. When the “National Movement” was in power, almost every federation was run by the members of the “National Movement”. Unfortunately, “Georgian Dream” started the same for what they criticized the “National Movement” and it is proved by appointment of Zurab Abashidze to the position of the head baseball federation. According to our information, they plant to appoint members of the “Georgian Dream” in other federations too. We may think that someone in the “Georgian Dream” tries to do foolish things to give ground to the National Movement’s representatives to speak about GD’s mistakes. There is no other explanation about this, because similar actions directly discredit the “Georgian Dream” said Mzhavanadze and called upon the authority to refrain from similar decisions and allow sportsmen to run federations.
