Silent War Zone -Reportage from Ergneti

January 25, 2013

Trace of the war 5 years ago has not faded away here at all.  Nearly every house is burnt out, the gates are riddled, and you may encounter even exploded shells. Mainly, old people live in the village. Children and young people come here to see them.

Necessity of opening free trading zone in Ergneti, near de-facto border, has been frequently discussed here lately. Nothing has changed in the village, neighboring with Tskhinvali, since the war of August, 2008. So, people are more interested in renovation of their own houses than in restoration of trading relations.

Occupied Tskhinvali is perfectly seen from the end of the village.  At nights, Ergneti residents sometimes hear Georgian songs from Tskhinvali. Afew months ago, Russian militaries surrounded the de-facto border with wire fence, though it cannot guarantee security in the border-line village.
