About 20 people recognized their cars among the vehicles put up to auction by the Ministry of Internal Affairs

February 4, 2013

About 20 people recognized their cars among the vehicles put up for auction by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, lawyer Irma Chkadua told InterpressNews.

According to her, the above-mentioned people say their cars were illegally seized and they demand their return. The Prosecutor’s Office has already launched an investigation into the case.

“Previous government used to compel detainees to sign over their property, including cars, to the law-enforcement agencies or some private individuals, which were later signed over to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Of course, it was illicit action but it was impossible to reach justice during the previous government. About a month ago, MIA spread statement and showed the vehicles they intended to put up to the auction. Many people recognized their cars among them, which were seized from them under force or blackmail. We appeal to the prosecutor’s office and MIA and categorically request them to stop auction on those vehicles and to return them to their legal owners; they shall not continue the illicit actions of the previous authority,” Irma Chkadua said.

MIA released statement on the sale of expensive vehicles on the auction on December 24, 2012.

About 50 vehicles were put up to the auction. They are Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover truck, Mercedes S, ML, INYX6, X5 and M5 which were purchased by the ministry before the new minister came into office.

Price of some of those cars is more than 100 000 USD and as the Ministry representatives claim their technical service cost more than 1 million lari per year.
