Viola Cramon: “The West Shall Convince Saakashvili that It Is Necessary to Stop Sabotage”

April 10, 2013

Spokesperson in foreign issue of the German Green Party Viola Fon Cramon said it is necessary to influence President Saakashvili in order to ensure his better cooperation with the new government.

According to the government’s press center, Cramon made the relevant statement during her visit to Georgia last week. ( http://www.gruene bundestag.de/presse/pressemitteilungen_ID_2000147/2013/april/georgien-praesident-saakaschwili-zu-kooperation-mit-der-neuen-regierung-draengen_ID_4387981.html )

“Since Parliamentary Elections of October 1, 2012 there had been feeling of new life in Georgia. The new government with Prime-Minister Ivanishvili as a leader set urgent priorities to implement new social policy and improvement of judicial system. The government has achieved significant progress for the establishment of more democratic society. Right to Freedom of Expression, right to assembly and manifestation are guaranteed. Political interference in the activities of public agencies has finished. Government looks for and often reaches compromises with the opposition. Large amount of accusations and complaints, where people request response to illicit activities of the previous government, are one of the main challenges of the new government. People, whose rights were breached in police stations or whose properties were illegally seized, hope the new government will create new, independent judiciary system. As a result, number of cases submitted to the ECHR has reduced. Besides, the purpose of the government is to ensure maximum transparency that is demonstrated by inviting OSCE observers to the trials of former governmental officials which launched in March. Unfortunately, President Saakashvili is against pragmatic cohabitation with the new government. He prolongs appointment of ambassadors and deputy ministers to key positions that is reasonable attempt to hamper the activities of the new government in the international level. With regard to the reform of the judiciary system, Saakashvili refuses to sign compromising agreement which was achieved through the negotiations with judges, Chairman of the Supreme Court and CoE Venice Commission. It is another example of abuse of authority by the president when he stubbornly opposes implementation such a significant reform in the field. German Government, EU and other members of the international community shall influence the president Saakshvili to start more pragmatic cohabitation with the new government. The west has significantly extended its support to Saakashvili as a hope of democracy and the guarantor of western impact in the region.  It is high time for them to convince Saakashvili that he should not abuse his authority and to stop sabotage of progressive steps taken by the new government,” Viola Cramon said.
