Vano Merabishvili, former Prime Minister of Georgia, Secretary General of the United General Movement (UNM) will be delivered a TV set in his prison cell, Sozar Subari, Georgia's Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance told journalists today, June 18.

Merabishvili, Subari said, enjoys a possibility to have access to other means of mass media.

“As regards television I have already issued an order and he [Merabishvili] will have a possibility to watch TV,” he added.

Vano Merabishvili, demanding a TV set, went on a hunger strike on June 17. He is in pretrial detention at the penitentiary department #9. Former employees of law enforcement bodies including high-ranking policemen are serving their prison terms at the same department.

On June 13, 2013 the representatives of Public Defender’s Office and the Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) having conducted a monitoring at the penitentiary department #9 said defendants/convicts have no possibility to watch TV but several prisoners including former Defense Minister Bacho Akhalaia.

Vano Merabishvili has been confined under the charges of bribing voters, exceeding official powers, misappropriation and embezzlement of money.
