Victim of Torture Meets Requirement for Early Release

On June 25th at 12:00 pm, press-conference will be held in Human Rights House Tbilisi regarding case of Zaza Azariashvili. Lawyer of Human Rights Center Nestan Londaridze defends interests of Zaza Azariashvili within the frame of Project Free Legal Assistance for Socially Vulnerable Citizens of Human Rights House Tbilisi.

Nestan Londaridze addresses Joint Permanent Commission of Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance and Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia. Zaza Azariashvili who has been convicted for the offense of theft of three sacks of cement by means of robbery suffers with severe illnesses and if he stays in the prison, his life will be under danger. Besides, the convict is victim of torture.

According to the family of the prisoner, reason of torture of Zaza Azariashvili became refusal to fulfill illegal assignment of administration, particularly, demand to kill political prisoner Vakhtang Maisaia. Vakhtang Maisaia who was recently released with the status of political prisoner confirms the statement.

Paragraph F of part I of article 37 of Code of Imprisonment envisages release of prisoner in case of illnesses and agedness. Part 2 of the article lists the illnesses which are grounds for release of prisoner. Azariashvili is sick with several illnesses listed in this provision.

Sister of Zaza Azariashvili and Vakhtang Maisaia who will present information regarding the torture of prisoners will attend the press-conference.

Member-organizations of Human Rights House Tbilisi Article 42 of Constitution and Human Rights Center are implementing project Free Legal Assistance for Socially Vulnerable Citizens.
