A New Prosecutor Took Up Bacho Akhalaia’s Case

Tbilisi City Court continues discussion of the third criminal case against Bachana Akhalaia. Prosecutor Revaz Nadoi again did not appear at the September 19 trial due to health problems. For that reason, Prosecutor Ia Darjania replaced Revaz Nadio in Bachana Akhalaia’s case.

At the trial, Prosecutor Ia Darjania requested 30 days to study the case materials and prepare final statement. Accused Bachana Akhalaia and his lawyers claim the requested period was artificially expanded. “I cannot believe that prosecutor independently decided to request such a long period for the study of case materials. I doubt they want to suit court procedures to political calendar,” Bacho Akhalaia said.

Judge Lasha Chkhikvadze set 10 days for the prosecutor as a reasonable period for the study of the case materials. Within the set time, Ia Darjania is authorized to study the materials and prepare final statement too.

The third criminal case against Bacho Akhalaia applies to the prison riot in 2006. At that time, Akhalaia was head of penitentiary department. Other accused in the same case are: Davit Chakua, Megis Kardava and Revaz Charbadze. They are accused of abuse of professional power (Article 333) and torture of imprisoned people (Article 144(1).

At the next trial on Bacho Akhalaia’s case the parties will present final statements.
