MIA Arrested Two Former Senior Officials For Organizing Terrorist Act

Officers of State Security Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, on the basis of the relevant decision of the Court, detained former head of Abkhazia Main Division of Constitutional Security Department-Roman Shamatava and former employee of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Special Operations Center Malkhaz Murghulia for terrorist act.

Investigation established that on May 21, 2008 Roman Shamatava, along with other high-rank officials of the Ministry plotted and implemented a terrorist act in Khurcha village, Zugdidi district, with the purpose to intimidate local population. The terrorist act posed danger to human lives, created the threat of causing substantial property damage and violated public security.

In particular, on May 21, 2008 population from Nabakevi village, Gali district had been 

mobilized in the village Khurcha, who planned to travel to Zugdidi by buses in order to participate in Parliament Elections.

“On the mentioned day Roman Shamatava, Malkhaz Murghulia and other accomplices 

were ambushed on the nearby territory in order to realize the plotted terrorist act and started intense firing to each other by which caused panic among peaceful population.

As a result of the explosion two busses were completely destructed while citizen Nani Kardava received serious health injury.

After the terrorist act organizers reimbursed the caused damage to the wounded civilian and bus drivers from hidden funds off the Ministry of Internal Affairs,” Giorgobiani said.

Investigation was launched for the crime envisaged by the article 323, II and III parts of the Criminal Code of Georgia. The committed crime envisages from 15 to 20 year of imprisonment or lifetime imprisonment.
