“Parties Unified Against Burjanadze” – Representatives of Burdjanadze’s Election Office Claim

Members of Lanchkhuti district office of the presidential candidate Nino Burjanadze blame the members of the Margvelashvili’s election office in harmonic relationship with the United National Movement’s members. They state members of the Georgian Dream and United National Movement jointly attend trainings in the precinct election commission. Representatives of Burjanadze’s office think it is violation. Lawyers working on election issues state joint trainings do not contradict the law.

“It is illegal when a political party gives commission members trainings in its office. Commission members and chairpersons were invited to the office of the Georgian Dream and trained there; they confirmed this fact with our representatives, who tried to find out what kind of meeting was organized in the GD’s office,” leader of the local office of the Democratic Movement-United Georgia Gia Gurgenidze said.

Representatives of Margvelashvili’s office responded to the accusations and said the trainings were organized on the ground floor of the building where their office is located. “Trainings are organized on the ground floor of the building; our office is on the second floor. I cannot see any law violation here. We requested the District Election Commission to organize trainings for our members. Other parties also joined our initiative and they jointly attended the training. It is not violation at all,” said Gela Pateishvili from Giorgi Margvelashvili’s office.

Humanrights.ge contacted the chairman of Lanchkhuti DEC Zviad Nakaidze and asked to comment on the issue. “Georgian Dream’s office really agreed the timetable of trainings with us but they organized similar trainings before parliamentary elections too and nobody hindered them in it. It is not violation of the law at all and we should not doubt about any illegal deals between parties,” Nakaidze said.

Head of Ozurgeti district office of the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association Tamaz Trapaidze commented about the issue with humanrights.ge

“If training is organized by the political party for its members, there is no violation in it,” Trapaidze said.
