Meeting between the Representatives of Human Rights Center and Medical Unit of the Penitentiary Establishment

December 9, 2013

On December 4, representatives of the Human Rights Center met senior officials of the Medical Unit at the Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance. During the meeting, lawyers of the Human Rights Center updated the ministry’s representatives with the detailed information about the problems of their clients.

Head of Medical Unit at the Ministry Natia Landia and other officials of the unit spoke about objective reasons of the existing problems; with regard to several cases they expressed readiness to continue work and to study the conditions of prisoners.

Several main problems were revealed during the meeting: insufficient medical treatment of prisoners, late diagnostics and operations, lack of medicines necessary for the post-operational period, negligence of the prison administrations and doctors and unhealthy attitude towards prisoners, asocial behavior of prisoners in ordinary centers, control of timely and correct supply of medicines to prisoners, etc.

Representatives of the Ministry and nongovernmental organizations agreed it is necessary to continue mutual cooperation to jointly eradicate the problems.

One part of lawyers of the Human Rights Center provide prisoners with free legal assistance in the frame of the project “Free Legal Aid for Socially Indigent Population of Georgia” implemented by the Human Rights House Tbilisi and second part in the frame of the NED funded project Human Rights and Election Monitoring.
