Because of hard snowfall started from December 9, Batumi was not supplied with electricity during two days and it paralyzed the city. Villages nearby Batumi are not supplied with electricity so far.

Electricity Distribution Company Energo Pro Georgia reported that 8% of their subscribers still is not supplied with electricity. “Bad weather created problems for us. We cannot reach some places and cannot restore electricity supply. If the weather allows us, we will at least manage to restore electricity supply in the district centers,” the press-center of the company said.

Damage of two high-voltage towers caused suspension of the electricity supply; those towers are owned by the state electricity system and Energo Pro Georgia is responsible to repair them.

After the two-day delay in electricity supply, Batumi was paralyzed. Public agencies stopped working, educational process stopped in public schools; banks and hospitals worked with delays. Cars could not move and crash-situations were often created.

Price on firewood increased in the city; previously, one sack of firewood cost 3-4 lari and lately its price increased up to 6 lari. The traders said there was deficit on firewood in the market. Price on warm boots in Batumi increased from 35 lari to 70 lari because of bad weather.

“I use wood stove because I have a little child; majority of my acquaintances could not warm flats. I did not send my child to kindergarten because there was no heating in the building, “Gulnara Lepsaia said. Unlike her, Nino Kvashilava spent all this period in cold. “I am IDP from Abkhazia and in the frame of the state program, the Ministry of IDPs settled us in the building. We warm our accommodations with electricity; they started gasification of the building but some technical problems originated and they stopped the process two years ago. Some of my neighbors installed electricity heaters and we spent days in their rooms because of warm; we took children to our rooms only to send them to beds. Bakeries stopped working because they did not have electricity supply and we had to visit several shops to find bread somewhere.”

On December 9, greenhouse demolished because of heavy snow in Salibauri village, Khelvachauri district. Two women died as a result of accident; five persons were taken to Batumi hospital. Head of MIA Main Department in Adjara Autonomous Republic Valeri Telia told Rustavi 2 that investigation was already launched into the incident: “39 people worked in the greenhouse; we called police and rescue team; they took people from the greenhouse; five persons were taken to hospital. We have already launched investigation and estimate the reasons,” Telia said.
