UNM Member from Kutaisi Requests Demolition of Vasil Kikvidze’s Statue

February 24, 2014

Shorena Kakabadze, Kutaisi

“I again and finally petition to the government, namely PM Irakli Garibashvili, to remove Vasil Kikvidze’s statue from Kutaisi,” Gia Gokadze, member of the Kutaisi City Council from the United National Movement, made the statement at the special briefing.

He petitioned to the Kutaisi interim mayor with the request last month but as he said it had no result.

“Since Shota Murgulia is not reading our letters and I am not surprised with it (because he has no authority in this city), I decided to petition to Irakli Garbiashvili. He governs Kutaisi like the rest of Georgia. Let them remove Kikvidze’s statue and express solidarity with Ukrainian people with it,” Gokadze said.

He clarified that unless his request is satisfied before February 23, and if government will not demolish the statue, he will paint it in red.

Vasil Kikvidze was born in Kutaisi in 1895. He participated in the World War I; served in the volunteers’ cavalierly. In 1917 he was elected chairman of the South-Western Front of Warrior-Revolutionists. In 1917-1918 he was leader of the Red Army’s battle in Ukraine. Afterwards he fought against the White Guardia and was killed during one of the battles at the age of 14; in January of 1919.
