Human Rights Center Welcomes Timely Transfer of the Convicted Person into Rustavi Prison # 17

September 22, 2014
Based on the decision of the Ministry of Corrections of Georgia, on September 19, convict Genadi Jeladze was moved from Prison # 7 into Rustavi Prison # 17.

Human Rights Center positively evaluates the timely decision of the Ministry of Corrections and hopes decisions will be made operatively in similar situations in future too, particularly when life of the convicted persons are in danger.

On September 18, Human Rights Center organized a press-conference together with the family members of the convict Genadi Jeladze in the press-club of Prime Time; the Center requested the Ministry of Corrections to remove the prisoner from Prison # 7 into semi-closed penitentiary establishment due to his grave health conditions. Genadi Jeladze was victim of torture and has diabetes. He injects insulin four times a day; he got ill as a result of physical assault and torture during imprisonment.

Genadi Jeladze was placed in Prison # 7 in the evening hours of September 16, that was protested by Human Rights Center as illegal decision. Genadi Jeladze’s placement in Prison # 7 created threats for his life and health. Before, the convict was in Rustavi Prison # 6, where he received special medical treatment.
