Still in the street, still under the threat of health problems

On December 4, Human Rights Centre held press-conference about the problems of homeless people in the press-club of the Prime Time.

At the press conference, Human Rights Center called on the Tbilisi Mayor David Narmania to intensify their support and attention to the homeless citizens in winter time.

Human Rights Center protects socially indigent citizen Neli Lekiashvili, who spends nights in the street. Mrs. Neli is 57-year-old, disabled woman with Diabetis who had stroke and heart attack several times; so life in the street creates serious threats to her life.

“This woman cannot live in the street. It creates serious threat to her health and life. Human Rights Center is doing everything to help her, but the result is not achieved yet,” said Tamar Avaliani, head of legal aid center at Human Right Centre.

The homeless woman and lawyer Tamar Avaliani of Human Rights Center have petitioned to the Tbilisi City Hall several times and requested meeting with the mayor, but in vain; in response, City Hall representatives explained to Neli Lekiashvili on the phone that many people have similar problems and her turn has not come yet. The only thing they offer is to live in the tents set up for homeless people in the Moscow Avenue, where there unbearable conditions, especially for a woman who needs insulin injections three times a day.

"I went to the tent city four times, but each time they told me that person with health problems cannot live there; moreover they said there was no place. I cannot talk and walk after heart-attacks and strokes and how can I live there; there are water ponds in the tents and you cannot keep hygiene,” said Neli Lekiashvili.

Humanrights.ge published publications about Mrs Neli in the past too. http://humanrights.ge/index.php?a=main&pid=17928&lang=eng
But the problem is still unresolved and Neli Lekiashvili’s health is still under threat, especially in winter.

"Human Rights Center addresses the Mayor of Tbilisi, to take urgent steps to allocate adequate living space for Neli Lekiashvili, or pay the rent. At the same time, adequate medical treatment and food should be provided to Neli Lekiashvili,” the statement of the Human Rights Centre reads.
