Suspended project in Gori- accusations between government and opposition

UNM Gori office representatives held protest rally in the semi-rehabilitated street in the historical district of Gori and accused the Georgian Dream of inactivity and requested renewal of the suspended rehabilitation works.

An exhibition was organized in parallel to the protest, where photos of the rehabilitation works in the old district were exhibited. 

Kakha Toliashvili, UNM member: “Rehabilitation works in the Gori Fortress District has been suspended for two years already; it had started during our governance. The project aimed to restore ancient look to the Tsereteli Street through rehabilitation of 240 houses, nearby streets and Gori Fortress; but unfortunately, the project was stopped and a lot of working places disappeared. It hindered development of tourism infrastructure too. We planned to arrange family hostels; the project had vital importance for the development of the tourism potential in Gori and in the region, which, is the main priority for our city's economic development.” 

Representatives of the Gori City Hall state construction and legal mistakes were made by the new government during the implementation of the rehabilitation project.  

Nino Berdzenishvili, representative of the public service unit at the Gori City Hall: “8 million lari was spent on the project; private companies were ordered to arrange communication, drinking water supply, electricity supply and sewerage systems in the city and despite the implemented work the local authority did not transfer any money to the company. Besides that, a local inhabitant appealed to the court for the poorly done rehabilitation work and requested 64 000 GE as a compensation. They rehabilitated the old district instead restoration that resulted into the disappearance of ethnographic value of the district. “ 

Representatives of the City Hall state a group of competent specialists will arrive from the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia who will study the archeological-ethnographic value of the district on the place. After the conclusion of the working group is ready report, rehabilitation of the old district will be completed.
