Garbage Dump in Gurjaani Create Threat of Epidemics

January 30, 2015

Lela Khechoshvili, Kakheti

Garbage dump has been created 100 meters away from the settlement in Mukuzani village, Gurjaani district for 4 years already. Velistsikhe village population uses it for years. Cleaning Service of Gurjaani district administration promised Mukuzani village population to arrange a dump in Velistsikhe village, after which the territory of the dump in Mukuzani will be cleaned. The service did not keep its promise and unsanitary in the Mukuzani dump creates threat of epidemic.

The same situation is in Vazisubani village. The garbage dump is arranged 70 - 80 meters away from the settlement, alongside the Telavi - Tbilisi railway line, near the ravine of Shashiani village. The dump was specially arranged there, but the holes were filled in long ago and garbage is scattered in the distance of 500 meters around it; it creates a threat to the local population and their cattle.

“Why did they arrange a dump along the railway line?! There are vineyards, gardens and pastures in the area; there are also houses; they turned the road into the garbage dump. There is unsanitary all around here.  Besides we are under threat of epidemic. The place is full of dogs. This winter, during the snow people saw a wolf in the dump. Though, local authority promised to move the dump to Tsnori,” local Gia Tsertsvadze said.

“There are a lot of ravines in the village and they are full of garbage. Garbage track arrives once a week; however there are districts where they do not go at all.  In windy weather garden get filled with garbage; the garbage is near the boring well, I have never seen similar untisanitary anywhere; the village is drawn in trash,” local Lia Solomnishvili said.

Director of the Ltd “Ketilmotskoba” service (public amenities) at Gurjaani district administration David Gogebashvili hopes the district government will pay attention to the dumps.

"Our responsibility is to deliver the garbage to dumps. Maybe, the districts, where our tracks do not go, are not on our list; but the cars go to other districts according to the schedule,” David Gogebashvili said.

According to Mukuzani village governor Eka Bendeliani, she abolished a dump year ago, but now population adds rubbish to the cleaned territory.

"During the previous government, garbage of Velistsikhe was also brought in this small village, which is absolutely unacceptable, because it is village center and public school is located nearby. I intend to address the issue in near future, clean the territory and install prohibiting sign-posts there; now we have new regulations in the law and people will be fined for throwing garbage in the street,” Eka Bendeliani said.

Gurjaani district governor Gia Gergidzem told Human Rights Center, that this problem bothers entire population of Georgia.

"There are 15-20 year old garbage dumps in every village in our district. Starting from New Year we will take the rubbish from the villages upper than Chumlaki village Telavi dump.

From February we start cleaning of dumps in each village. We did not have enough funds before. In addition, despite the fact that the cleaning service sends trucks to villages, population still arbitrarily throw garbage on the dump.

Since the problem bothers population of every village in Gurjaani district, we petitioned to the Ministry of Environment for help. We will do our best to solve this problem soon,”- Gurjaani district governor Gia Gergidze said.
