Press-Release - Giorgi Tsomaia Accused in the Assault of Police Officer Freed from Courtroom

On May 7, at 11:00 am, in the press-club of Reporter, Human Rights Center will hold press-conference about the acquittal of Giorgi Tsomaia. Human Rights Center represented Giorgi Tsomaia at the court.

On May 6, with the legal assistance of Human Rights Center the Tbilisi City Court acquitted accused Giorgi Tsomaia in the assault of police officer. 

Lawyer of Human Rights Center defended rights of Giorgi Tsomaia.

In the midnight of August 14, 2014 Giorgi Tsomaia was ruthlessly beaten by police officers in the Vake Saburtalo district police unit #2, when he applied to the police office for help close to his house. Tsomaia requested police officers to return his cell phone which police had seized from during previous imprisonment term. In reply to that, about 11 police officers beat him during 10 minutes. They beat and kicked him in the chest, head and belly; degraded and sputtered him. The expertise conclusion confirmed the physical assault. Nevertheless, instead launching criminal case against police officers, next day, on August 15, Giorgi Tsomaia was charged for the attack on police officer with knife. 
 
Today, Judge Khatuna Kharchilava at the criminal case collegium of the Tbilisi City Court acquitted Giorgi Tsomaia in the imposed charge.

Human Rights Center continues defense of Giorgi Tsomaia’s interests and requests the Prosecutor’s Office to timely investigate the fact of physical assault of Tsomaia in the Vake-Saburtalo district police office.
