Accusations against Gurjaani Geo Hospital

May 8, 2015

Gurjaani population blames the personnel of the Geo Hospital in inattention. They request to re-employ dismissed medical personnel in the hospital. Incorrect diagnosis and treatment, several deceased patients – these accusations were voiced by the patients in their interviews with humanrights.ge.

Gurjaani resident Zaur Todashvili, 57, died in the Mtskheta branch of the Geo Hospital with unclear diagnosis. He was taken there from Gurjaani Geo Hospital on April 13.

The wife of the deceased man said ten minutes after he was delivered to the Gurjaani clinic the patient’s conditions improved; however the doctors placed him in the intensive therapy unit because of oxygen insufficiency. When later relatives arrived at the hospital to see the patient, they found Zaur Todashvili in critical conditions. The relatives demanded to transport him to Tbilisi but doctors opposed them. They also refused to make tomography for Todashvili because of his weight (at that moment the patient weighed 120 kg).

Afterwards, wife of the patient Tsitsino Todashvili was notified that they had to immediately take Zaur Todashvili to Mtskheta clinic for dialysis. Tsitsino Todashvili said the reanomobile arrived in Gurjaani 12 hours later and the patient deceased several minutes after he was delivered to the Mtskheta Geo Hospital clinic.

“A nurse in Mtskheta clinic mentioned that the patient already had corpse stains and pulse index was 25 units that were sign of death,” Todashvili’s nephew said.

The relatives of Zaur Todashvili said the reason of the patient’s death was unclear. He was delivered to the hospital for virus infection but in the intensive therapy unit his conditions extremely aggravated. The widow blames the doctors in dragging out time during her husband’s treatment in order to attract insurance funding.

Manager of Gurjaani mutli-profile medical center of Geo Hospital Nikoloz Lominadze said the catastrophe brigades usually take patients in emergency situations from Gurjaani Geo Hospital to Mtskheta branch because the former is not adequately equipped.

“Information about the death of six patients in our clinic is a joke. Geo Hospital has high-qualified personnel who provide patients with adequate service. Although it is impossible to cure all patients, but the mortality index does not exceed the statistical limit,” NIkoloz Lominadze said.

Tariel Rostiashvili, 59, from Vazisubani village in Gurjaani district  was also taken from Gurjaani Geo Hospital Clinic to Tbilisi Heart and Blood Circulation Clinic by the catastrophe brigade but he died of heart attack.

The relatives of the deceased man blamed cardiologist Spartak Lekveishvili in negligence; they claim they heard the doctor confess the mistake with his colleague.

“Afterwards they told us they had called catastrophe brigade to take the patient to Tbilisi. The doctors hide only reanimatologist Zura Jajanashvili supported us,” Tariel Rostiashvili’s relatives said.

Humanrights.ge contacted cardiologist Spartak Lekveishvili who could not recall the last incident with us.

Local Anan Gogishvili also complained about the service in Gurjaani clinic. She said the laboratory personnel do not follow minimal hygiene norms when they test patients.

Maya Piranishvili from Gurjaani complains about professional negligence of the neuropatologist at Geo Hospital.

“On Saturday, my mother had a stroke and took her to the hospital. Doctors were not in the clinic. We called neuropatologist and he did not arrive because it was a weekend and clarified that nobody could argue him for not coming to the hospital on Saturday,” Maya Piranishvili said.

She added that since doctors could not provide the patient will medical service, she took mother back home and different neuropatologist assisted them.

Representatives of other medical clinics also speak about poor conditions in the Geo Hospital. They said Geo Hospital sacked old and experience personnel and employed relatives of the administration.

Nikoloz Lominadze said the old personnel were dismissed based on their personal resignation applications.

“People were dismissed because they could not get used to new working environment in the clinic. Currently we have all personnel invited from Tbilisi and the hospital is working hard,” Nikoloz Lominadze said.

Gurjaani population urges the Ministry of Labor, Healthcare and Social Welfare for help.
