Lawyer of Tchabuka Tchabukadze was not permitted to see him

May 27, 2015

Lela Khechoshvili, Kakheti

The employees of regional headquarters of MIA in Kakheti arrested and beat 30-year-old Tchabuka Tchabukadze at night on May 21. The incident took place in village Vejini of Gurjaani municipality while the young man was standing in front of his own house with his friends. As a result of beating, Tchabukadze has multiple physical injuries. He is placed in the multi-profile medical center “Geo Hospitals” in Gurjaani.

The relatives of Tchabuka Tchabukadze addressed the Human Rights Centre’s office in Kakheti for help. They said medical personnel of the Geo Hospitals do not pay attention to him.. They doubt doctors do not fairly reflect the injuries of the young man in medical documents. Besides, Tchabuka Tchabukadze was forced to sign the affidavit which reflects incorrect facts. According to this testimony Tchabukadze fell from the stairs.

The officials of “Geo Hospitals” in Gurjaani did not allow the lawyer of Human Rights Centre Kakheti office Lia Khuroshvili to visit Tchabuka Tchabukadze who was beaten by police officers.

“On May 25, approximately at 12:40pm I went to the “Geo Hospitals” in Gurjaani with the warrant. As soon as the security officer saw me with the mother of Tchabuka Tchabukadze, he blocked me in hallway; first he asked my identity, then he sent me to service center, after that they took me to the administration manager Medea Tsabutashvili. I explained to her that I wanted to meet my client. Tsabutashvili took the warrant and asked me to wait. After 10 minutes she came in an aggressive manner and told me that this warrant was not official document even though it had a stamp on it. According to Tsabutashvili I will be able to see my client in 10 days after he is discharged and sent home,”_ said the lawyer of Human Rights Centre, Lia Khuroshvili.

According to Lia Khuroshvili, it is possible that the relatives of Tchabukadze had grounded doubts about medical personnel.

“It is worth mentioning that a police officer can visit a half asleep patient and conduct an investigation, while the lawyer is prohibited to see her client,” _stated Lia Khuroshvili.

Trustees of Public Defender visited Gurjaani to examine the case. Trustees met the relatives of Tchabukadze and asked for their explanation. After examining the gathered information the Public Defender will react,”_ the statement published on the official web-page of Public Defender of Georgia reads.

The case is under investigation. Human Rights Center will protect Tchabuka Tchabukadze’s interests.
