The Court Issued Verdict into Levan Kortava’s Case

Kutaisi Appeal Court issued final verdict into the case of Levan Kortava who died in Geguti Prison N14.

Falsifying evidence, negligence, assistance in premeditated self-injure that led to his death- the court eased the sentence of 6 persons who were judged by the first instance court. The sentences were decreased at 3, 6 and 2 years for those 5 persons who were sentenced to 15 years in prison.

“Despite the fact that the sentence has been eased, this is not the right decision. They accuse the person for a crime, when he was not even there. We will fight and appeal against this sentence at the Supreme Court, or if necessary, even in higher instances. This is a political case. The previous and current Governments are fighting each other with this case. As a result, arbitrary prisoners stay in jail,”- says the lawyer of one of the convicts, Dali Sulakveladze.

The relatives of Levan Kortava are also planning to appeal the verdict of the Appeal Court. They believe the initial verdict was to be upheld.
